AIDS in Africa Africa has been hit harder by this epidemic than any other region in the world. AIDS is now the leading killer in sub-Saharan Africa, where 25.3 million people have HIV or AIDS. In 1998, 200,000 Africans died from war - 2.2 million died from HIV/AIDS. Though it has just 11% of the world’s population, sub-Saharan Africa is home to 70% of the world’s HIV-positive population. In Africa’s most affected regions, as many as one person in four are estimated to carry HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Below are links to sources of education on the current status of the epidemic and what's being done about it in Africa.Consumer Project on Technology - Health Care Technologies and Intellectual Property - Information on South Africa and access to pharmaceutical drugs Medecins Sans Frontieres - The Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines.
