Total Reported AIDS Cases
  • In the United States, the cumulative number of reported AIDS cases from the beginning of the epidemic in 1981 through June 2001, is 793,026.
  • 40,894 cases were reported in the United States between June 2000 and July 2001.
  • 457,667 deaths from reported AIDS cases have occured since the beginning of the epidemic.

The World Health Organization announced that HIV/AIDS is now the "world's most deadly infectious disease", and holds fourth place among causes of death worldwide.
